How is the cost calculated?

Rated power in watts is converted to kilowatts, then multiplied by the time used in hours. That gives an estimated kWh figure for one use.

kWh per use = (Watts ÷ 1,000) × (Minutes ÷ 60)
Cost per use = kWh per use × Electricity price

This is a simple estimate. Appliances with thermostats or variable power may draw less than their maximum rated wattage for part of the time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is microwave output power the same as electrical input power?

No. The cooking/output rating can be lower than the electricity drawn from the wall. For cost estimates, use the input wattage from the rating label when available.

Why can microwaves be economical for small meals?

They often heat food for a shorter period and do not need to heat a large oven cavity.

Does standby power matter?

It can add a small amount over time, but this calculator focuses on active cooking use.
